AUTUMN TERM 1
BLOG POST: Sunday 23rd September 2018
Autumn term at St Francis has got off to a fantastic, active start! With the completion of our brand new playground markings this month, our children now have access to a wonderful new 'Daily Mile' track - an active daily pursuit that every child in school now undertakes after some of our classes trialled it successfully during 2017-18 (with everyone - pupils and teachers - seeing the fantastic impact it had on our concentration in class and overall fitness!) Despite the recent wet weather, children have also enjoyed making use of the other new educational markings for their own recreation at playtimes. As Spring and Summer terms roll around, we fully expect our playground to be a hive of energy and the impact of the markings to really be felt!
With the start of the new year, St Francis has newly appointed eight Year 6 pupils to become 'Sports Ambassadors for 2018-19. Each of our young leaders has already participated in a 'pupil voice' questionnaire activity about P.E & School Sport at St Francis (including possible paths for our school in the future), and will be organising our school's entry into the BwD 'Design the Certificate' competition, run by local the School Games Organiser team, later this month.
Despite some early disruption in the hall following our fantastic new infant department re-fit, P.E. lessons are now in full flow. Year 3 are enjoying their swimming lessons each Tuesday, Year 6 have been throwing themselves into their Tag Rugby lessons and Year 5 have been dancing their proverbial socks off, working up a sweat as we start by dancing for fitness. As a school, each class will soon be making use of our new 'iMoves' Dance curriculum (Sports Premium: 2018-19) which has several fantastic new topic-based dance routines to complement our learning in class. Watch out, Michael Flatley...
New after-school clubs are also in full swing with around 100 club spots filled for our first tranche of physical fun: Cross Country (Monday), Archery (Tuesday), Street Dance (Wednesday), Year 4-5-6 Girls Football (Thursday), Year 5-6 Football (Friday) have all begun and will continue through the end of the half term. We also have several BwD Sporting events on the horizon (access through the BwD SGO team, via the Sports Premium 2018-19), including the first BwD Cross Country Race at Witton Park (October 8th) and the famous Jubilee Shield Qualifying nights in October at St Bedes. Last year St Francis recorded its best team cross country result in 10 years and reached Jubilee Shield finals, narrowly missing out on a place in the semi-finals... will our teams go one better this year?
